Environments 6 contains two recordings tracked ten hours apart in Georgia’s Okefenokee Swamp, a remote 438,000-acre wetland. Irv Teibel often called “Dusk” his favorite recording from the series. The area where he captured these soundscapes is accessible only by airboat. Teibel took his dog on the expedition and later said that they were almost eaten by an alligator.
From the liner notes: “Once night fell, the area become totally inaccessible (or inescapable, as the case may be). The alligators occasionally heard in the front channels were approximately twenty to fifty feet from the microphones.” Teibel claimed that this recording was included on NASA’s famous Voyager “Golden Record.” After speaking with the album’s producers Ann Druyan and Tim Ferris, it seems more likely that the recording was in the running but didn't make the final cut of the “Sounds of Earth” collage.
