Little Ben & the Cheers

Richard Pegue convinced Maurice Alpert to gamble with Penny once again. He bankrolled a session by a young group that Richard had discovered through his friend Margaret Norfleet, a student at Chicago Teachers College, which shared a building with Wilson College. Margaret's brothers, Frank and John Norfleet, were the first and second tenors of a teenaged quartet, the Cheers. Her cousin, Benjamin "Little Ben" Norfleet, born January 28, 1947, sang lead, and his younger brother Merylon sang baritone. Ben and Merylon lived in the Altgeld Gardens projects on the far South Side; their father Peter was one of the Norfleet Brothers, stars on Chicago's sanctified circuit.
