Joe King was a stalwart guitar player whose soulful approach to the instrument has left its fingerprints al over the demos found in this collection. He was a creative and thoughtful songwriter and had a distinct, emotive voice, but as a performer preferred to stay in the background. King himself claims to have never performed live as a front man, but those who hear "Speak On Up" might find this hard to believe. He got his start playing professionally with drummer Lee Sykes and the Highlanders band, the house band at the Lemon Drop on High Street. King was hired by Clem Price for session work, but was offered his own release because of his obvious talent.
