Bob & Fred

When Bob Thomas and Fred Brown came in with their $14.95, they had no idea that they would be spending the next three weeks rehearsing the same song over and over. Sensing he had something very special on his hands, McCoy set out to record what would become the label's defining song. Opening with an infectious violin and rhythm that shuffles, "I'll Be On My Way" then introduces the double-tracked vocals of iced-coffee crooner Thomas. The song was a slice of sugary sweet soul and belonged on the airwaves, but local disc jockeys couldn't get their audiences to climb aboard.
