Annette Poindexter

While the stream of Syl Johnson sides had slowed to a trickle by 1970, his skillful production work only increased, both for Twinight and his own Shama label. The pairing of Pieces of Peace with Annette Poindexter, his girlfriend at the time, yielded impressive albeit unsuccessful results. Alabama native Benjamin Wright had moved north to join the Pieces of Peace, and is responsible for the lovely arrangements on “Mama” and “Wayward Dream.” Released in May of 1970, “Mama” has a bombastic sound that would only make sense when disco arrived half a decade later. Poindexter would release another single on Brena, a division of Syl’s Shama label, but when their relationship faded, her career followed suit.
